Frequently Asked Questions

How does tracing with Drawlight work?

Drawlight shows the picture you pick over the live camera image of your paper. Stand your phone on a glass or a few books about 25 cm above the paper, so the camera sees the page, then follow the lines on the screen with your pencil. You can lock the picture in place, change how strongly it shows, and mirror it or add a grid.

What do I need?

Your iPhone or iPad, paper, a pencil and something to rest the phone on — a drinking glass or a stack of books works well. No special stand, projector or drawing skills are needed.

What is light box mode?

Light box mode turns the screen into a light table. The picture is shown at full brightness, you lay thin paper directly on the screen and trace the lines that shine through. It's handy when you don't have a glass or books nearby, and it works best with thin paper such as printer or tracing paper.

What is AR mode, and which iPhones support it?

In AR mode the picture is pinned to your paper using Apple's ARKit: you hold the phone in your hand, and when you move or tilt it the picture stays where you placed it on the page. It works on devices that support ARKit world tracking, which includes every iPhone that runs iOS 16 or later. If your device doesn't support it, the app says so and the camera and light box modes still work. AR mode is part of Drawlight Pro.

Is my photo uploaded when I turn it into a sketch?

No. Photo to sketch runs entirely on your device; the photo is never uploaded. The camera image is also used live on the device and is only saved when you take a photo or record a video, and then only on your device. Pictures you create with Image Playground are made by Apple on the device as well.

What's free and what does Drawlight Pro unlock?

Drawlight is free to download. 59 pictures, the first days of the 7-day course, some coloring pages and some lettering fonts are free. Drawlight Pro unlocks the full library, every lesson and coloring page, all sketch styles and fonts, AR mode, video recording and Image Playground. Pro is available as a weekly or yearly subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase; prices are shown in the app before you buy.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Drawlight and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid the next renewal; you keep Pro until that period ends. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
